What WriteProof records
WriteProof is a school-managed Chrome extension. It runs only on school Chromebooks and school Google accounts, and only records activity inside Google Docs documents. A small "WriteProof" badge appears in the corner of every document it is recording.
Recorded
- Timing of key presses, grouped by kind (letter, space, punctuation, backspace, delete, arrow keys). The letters you type are not recorded.
- Pastes and drag-and-drops: the length and the pasted text (up to 4,000 characters), and whether it came from an AI chat site's formatting.
- Undo, redo, cut and copy counts, and clicks on Docs' built-in AI features.
- When the document tab is hidden or shown (switching away).
- Visits to AI writing sites (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, QuillBot) — the site name and how long — and only while a Google Doc is open.
Not recorded
- Anything outside Google Docs: no other websites (except the AI-site list above), no email, no screenshots, no camera or microphone.
- Personal Google accounts or personal devices.
Who can see it
Only teachers of the student's Google Classroom courses, and school administrators. Every time someone views a report it is written to an audit log.
How long it's kept
Raw activity data is deleted automatically after 365 days.
How it's used
Reports show how a document was written. They highlight things a teacher may want to ask about — they are never treated as proof by themselves. Students can always explain their process.
